Therapy

Most of us have been conditioned in some way to internalize, repress, or disavow difficult feelings or experiences. In therapy, my clients frequently express that they don’t want to be a ‘burden’ to others, and may not feel a basic entitlement to their struggle – that what they are going through matters, and is difficult.

What is often lacking in relationships is the invitation to share how we truly feel or think – without worrying how others will respond, or that we will be blamed, shamed, or judged.

This is what makes therapy so special. Being encouraged to safely share your inner world is soothing and validating, and gives us permission to truly turn inwards.

However, the inner world can be scary, confusing, and layered with shame. I help my clients hold the parts of their experience that is too often neglected or kept hidden out of fear that one would be seen as unacceptable.

In the act of this witnessing, a person can come to understand that for all their struggles, worries, and doubts, they are all the more authentic and whole. The therapeutic relationship nurtures self-compassion, which in turn promotes awareness and healing.

It would be my honour to begin this work with you.

Counselling - Teens and Young Adults

Connecting with youth requires a special way of relating. Tom has been working with this population for over a decade in a variety of settings, and approaches his work in an informal, relationally-focused manner.

Young adults deal with many developmental and systemic challenges, all in the context of striving to be independent in an increasingly complex world. Tom takes care to validate the struggles associated with being a young adult to better support the transition out of high school and into adult life.

Counselling - Adults

Relationships, family of origin issues, work, and parenting struggles are among the variety of areas that Tom supports clients with.

Given the pressures of managing life as an adult, therapy can be particularly effective when an individual is attempting to resolve complex issues that do not have clear solutions.

If you have been feeling lost, anxious, or empty, therapy might be a good next step.
